Sinclair Centre Redevelopment
The objective of this project was to determine the feasibility of the redevelopment of a Federal Government site in downtown Vancouver. The new centralized office development would provide an opportunity to showcase a new form of sustainable government workplace and a meaningful integration with the public realm. The final report summarizes the collaborative effort of many stakeholders through interactive workshops, critical analysis, and case studies, and establishes the foundational principles and direction for the project’s further development.
Acting as the sustainable design advisor for the project, Local Practice led a consensus-based Integrated Design Process involving multiple workshops and many stakeholders that focused on the co-development, collaboration, and clarification of the foundational aspects of the project. The project aims to regenerate the site and the resources it relies upon by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere, creating more water and energy than it consumes, and inspire Canadians of all ages and backgrounds to act as custodians of their land and environment. Of the three conceptual design options developed, Local Practice focused on a scheme that acknowledged the history of the site, considering both its heritage value and natural ecosystems. Federal Government targets for GHG reduction had a substantial impact on the project’s form and character, providing the potential for the project to become a sustainability showcase and demonstrate climate change action.
