Mayne Island Family Place
Located on the Traditional Territory of the Tsartlip First Nation, Mayne Island Family Place is a volunteer-run childcare facility in the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia. Local Practice became involved at the Building Permit stage of the project, taking over from Ratio Architecture, who was the original design firm for the project. We were hired for our expertise with prefabricated, high performance childcare facilities and served as the Coordinating Registered Professional through to the end of construction.
Building on Mayne Island, accessible only by ferry, brings many challenges inherent to remote sites. We collaborated with the contractor to coordinate the details of the project’s prefabrication strategy, reducing the amount of on-island work required, and refined the building envelope, in partnership with the contractor, to meet the client’s goals for cost effectiveness, performance and durability.
To support the volunteer-run client organization, we provided an enhanced level of service encompassing both architectural services and strategy, throughout the construction period. We also worked to ensure project progress and successes were made legible to the organization’s board and to the broader Mayne Island community, bolstering the facility’s role as a community anchor.
