Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Projects
Local Practice was a part of the Architectural and Community Integration Team working on the conceptual design for the new Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Projects, located in Richmond, BC. The vision for Iona Island (xʷəyeyət) captured in the Project Definition Report, completed in 2022, encapsulates a vision for a resilient Metro Vancouver region – whereby infrastructure is future-proof and builds the local economy, natural habitats are thriving and are accessible places of respite for people and wildlife, relationships with First Nations are being developed through meaningful partnerships, and the site is designed to keep pace with sea level rise.
Through an Integrated Design Process, the conceptual design has been developed as a portfolio of interrelated projects to meet these goals and respond to the evolving challenges in and around Iona Island (xʷəyeyət). The treatment plant itself will occupy an expanded footprint on the eastern half of Iona Island, employing best practices for wastewater treatment and providing flexibility for future treatment technology upgrades. A suite of ecological restoration projects integrated with public park uses is contemplated across Iona Island (xʷəyeyət). Integrated resource recovery, interpretive programming, and sustainability initiatives will also form core components of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Projects.
